The Power of Habits: Build a Bulletproof Life Through Habits

As a personal trainer, gym owner and a United States Marine Veteran, I've seen firsthand how the power of habits can transform lives. In the Marine Corps, habits are the backbone of daily life, creating discipline and order. In fitness, they are the stepping stones to achieving and surpassing your goals. But how exactly do habits contribute to building a bulletproof life, both physically and mentally? Let’s dive in.

The Science Behind Habits

Habits are more than just repeated actions; they are wired into our brains. A habit is formed when a behavior becomes automatic in response to a specific cue. This process, known as ‘habit looping,’ involves a cue (trigger), a routine (behavior), and a reward. Understanding this loop is crucial for developing habits that serve our goals.

Understanding Habit Loop

Cue 1: Time

Time often triggers our daily habits, such as morning routines or afternoon breaks. These habits, whether good or bad, are frequently linked to our emotional states at those times, like boredom or loneliness.

Cue 2: Enviorment

Our environment can either encourage good habits or foster bad ones, as our behaviors often respond to our surroundings. New habits tend to form more easily in new locations, as familiar places already have associated behaviors and routines.

Cue 3: Proceeding Event

Actions like checking a phone after hearing a buzz or clicking on a Facebook notification are examples of habits prompted by these events. Utilizing these events can be effective in developing new habits, as seen in habit stacking, where a new habit is linked to a routine event.

Cue 4: Emotional State

Emotional states often cue habits, especially negative ones, such as eating when depressed or online shopping when bored. Harnessing these emotions for positive habits is challenging, requiring simultaneous emotional awareness and action.

Cue 5: Other People

The company we keep profoundly impacts our habits. Studies show that habits, such as obesity, can be influenced by friends, even if they're distant. Embracing this, it's beneficial to surround ourselves with people who reflect the habits we wish to adopt.

The Role of Discipline

DISCIPLINE = FREEDOM

Discipline is not just a word; it is a way of life. It's about doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like it. The beauty of discipline is that it starts with a single action and evolves into a habit. When you consistently choose actions that align with your goals, you are paving the way for habits that build a resilient and focused life.

Habit Formation in Fitness

In fitness, habits are your greatest allies. Whether it’s waking up early for a workout, preparing healthy meals, or ensuring adequate recovery time, each good habit contributes to a larger picture of health and wellness. Remember, the goal is not to overwhelm yourself with a complete lifestyle overhaul overnight. Start small. Pick one or two habits that you can commit to each day, and build from there. Below are 5 simple habits to start building when it comes to your fitness.

  • Consistent Exercise Routine: Establishing a regular exercise schedule is crucial. Whether it’s early morning jogs, lunchtime gym sessions, or evening yoga classes, sticking to a consistent workout routine reinforces discipline and steadily improves physical fitness.

  • Balanced Nutrition Planning: Develop the habit of planning and preparing balanced meals. This includes focusing on whole foods, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Good nutrition supports fitness goals and requires the discipline to make healthy choices consistently.

  • Adequate Hydration: Make a habit of drinking enough water throughout the day. Hydration is essential for optimal fitness performance and recovery. Carrying a water bottle and setting reminders can be helpful strategies to ensure regular water intake.

  • Regular Sleep Schedule: Maintaining a regular sleep schedule is crucial for fitness. Proper rest is as important as active training, as it aids in recovery, muscle growth, and energy replenishment. A disciplined approach to getting enough sleep each night can significantly enhance fitness results.

  • Mindfulness and Stress Management: Incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing exercises into daily routines helps manage stress and improve mental focus. This habit not only supports mental health but also enhances the mental discipline required for maintaining other fitness-related habits.

The Impact of Small Changes

Never underestimate the power of small changes. Consistency in these small habits accumulates, leading to significant transformations over time. For instance, opting for water instead of soda, adding a 10-minute daily stretch, or swapping one unhealthy snack for a healthier option can lead to substantial long-term benefits. In my opinion, this is often referred to as 1% better every day mentality, the compounding effect of positive habit building.

Your goal should be to just WIN THE DAY. You cannot win your entire life in 24 hours. Focus on controlling what you can control, take ownership of your life and try to get better every day.

Imagine you just laid your head down after a long day. You reflect on the day and you say, “Damn, I crushed today. Today was a win.” Now, imagine you did this for 28 out of the 30 days of the month. You won 93% of your days that month. You don’t think that would add up?

Staying on Track

Life will inevitably throw challenges your way, but the strength of your habits can keep you anchored. Regular check-ins with yourself, maintaining a journal, or using fitness apps are great ways to stay accountable. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. TAKE OWNERSHIP.

There will undoubtably be days that nothing goes right, your routine is off, you got a bad phone call, life is full of those days. Having a foundation of positive habits can balance out those “bad days”. The bad days are where you make the most ground and build your discipline.

“Everyday you wake up is an opportunity to get better.”

The Ripple Effect of Good Habits

Good habits in fitness often lead to improvements in other areas of life. The discipline from sticking to a workout schedule can translate into enhanced productivity at work or better time management skills. The confidence gained from fitness achievements can spill over into personal relationships and self-perception and visa versa.

Build positive habits in every facet of your life. This doesn’t just apply to health and fitness. There are ways to improve across the board, the key is being honest with yourself. Find your weaknesses and build on that. Establishing strong foundational habits is baked into personal discipline. The good news is it has a compounding effect and often positively effects the other ares of your life.

Building a bulletproof life through habits is a journey of small, consistent steps. I encourage you to embrace the power of habits. Start where you are, use what you have, and do what you can. The road to a stronger, more resilient you is paved with the habits you cultivate today.

Stay strong, stay committed.
